The band’s frontman Chris Martin said: “Being asked to play at the closing celebrations for the Paralympic athletes in London is a great honour for us.

“It will be a spectacular closing ceremony for the athletes and spectators in the stadium and everyone watching around the world and we’re so happy to be involved.

“It will be one of the biggest nights in our lives and we’re very excited to try and create a performance for the last night of the Games that will close London 2012 in style.”

The closing ceremony – called the ‘Festival of Flame’ – takes place on Sunday, September 9 at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven said that he is confident that the 2012 Paralympics will be “best Games ever”.

“Athletes are delivering record breaking performances on a regular basis and ticket sales are the best yet, so far out from the Games,” he said.

“Add Coldplay into that mix and I think the ingredients for there best ever Games are coming together.”

Some 4,200 athletes from 165 countries will compete at the London 2012 Paralympics, which kick off on August 29. The remaining tickets will go back on sale from 11am tomorrow (May 21).

Cheryl Cole back Rihanna for image

Cheryl Cole has lauded Rihanna for the authenticity of her pop star image.

Speaking to GQ magazine, Cole also praised the ‘We Found Love’ singer’s “freedom” in not being influenced by negative comments about her.

“You know what I love about Rihanna? I know she gets a lot of criticism, too, about what she wears and what she sings about, but she is so free,” she explained.

”She doesn’t give two f**ks. I love that in her. I love that sense of freedom about her. She’s gorgeous and free. A perfect pop star.”

The ‘Fight For This Love’ singer also compared her career to that of the US superstar, adding: “She’s been through the same thing absolutely. And you can imagine how intense it is when all the world’s eyes are on you. So she knows that feeling. But she’s free-spirited, she just doesn’t give a s**t.

“Maybe it’s going through everything she’s gone through that has enabled her to get to that point. She’s like, ‘Whatever. What more can you say about us? You can’t hurt us any more’. I love that about her. It’s liberating. She’s liberal.”

The pair reportedly recorded a duet together back in January, having planned a collaboration since early last year.
